Baltic Sea ports kick off project including LNG bunkering

Three Finnish ports Turku, Naantali and HaminaKotka, together with Swedish Port of Stockholm and shipping company Viking Line will invest EUR 8.1 million in an EU-supported joint project that includes plans for LNG bunkering. 

The project aims to improve the maritime links between Sweeden and Finland and reduce the environmental impact from shipping in the Baltic Sea, Port of Stockholm informed on Wednesday.

Swedish port added that the joint project includes preparations and construction of waste water reception facilities and installations to enable ro-ro and ro-pax ferries to connect to onshore power supply.

It also includes planning for reception of scrubber sludge and LNG bunkering, while Viking Line, operating between Turku and Stockholm, intends to develop a ro-ro passenger ferry concept to operate between Finland and Sweden.

EU granted EUR 2,650,000 million through its Connecting Europe Facility programme for the project that will run until December 2016.
