General Dynamics NASSCO launches APT's fifth LNG-ready ship

San Diego-based shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO on Saturday, March 25, christened and launched the LNG-ready Palmetto State, the final ship in an eight-ship ECO Class tanker program.

The keel for the Palmetto State, fifth and final LNG-ready vessel for American Petroleum Tankers, a Kinder Morgan unit, was laid in September last year.

Like it’s sister vessels, the Palmetto State is a 610-foot-long, 50,000 deadweight-ton, LNG-conversion-ready product tanker with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.

General Dynamics NASSCO has already delivered the Lone Star State, the Magnolia State, the Garden State and the Bay State have been delivered over the course of 2015 and 2016 and have been placed in service.

All ships were designed by DSEC, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of Busan, South Korea.

The design incorporates MAN ME slow-speed main engine and an optimized hull form. The tankers will also have dual-fuel-capable auxiliary engines and the ability to accommodate future installation of an LNG fuel gas system.
