Klaipedos Nafta, implementing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project, said it is getting interest from market participants regarding LNG reload into railway wagons, LNG trucks and LNG bunkering.
In order to determine the potential demand of such LNG services and amounts, the company announces a public market consultation. This is to inform market participants, who intend to use LNG in Lithuania, the other Baltic states and Poland, that SC Klaipedos Nafta is considering the development of land-based LNG infrastructure – the construction of the LNG terminal in Klaipeda port to provide new services.
It also aims to better understand the need for LNG in different areas of scope: the use of a liquid or, after regasification, compressed gas in the transport or as an alternative energy source for industries.
As it is already known, Klaipeda LNG terminal is to be operational from 1st January 2015 and will provide LNG regasification and reload services.
However, environmental requirements to ship fuel are tightening, therefore ship owners are interested in alternatives to conventional ship fuels and LNG bunkering infrastructure at the port of Klaipeda. Such services are provided or will soon be provided in an increasing number of LNG terminals in Europe, for example, Zeebrugge LNG Terminal in Belgium, “Enagas” controlled LNG terminals in Spain.
“We hope that during market consultation the companies will express the need to use the new services of Lithuanian LNG terminal, and it will lead to new and innovative LNG infrastructure and technology development in Lithuania and throughout the region,” says Rokas Masiulis, CEO of SC Klaipedos Nafta.
The company has received European Union support for the development of new LNG infrastructure preparatory work.
