Offshore Energy: ABS to discuss requirements for LNG fueled OSVs in the US

As of 1 January 2015, the sulfur emissions limit applicable to ships and offshore support vessels (OSVs) operating in emission control areas (ECAs) will drop to no more than 0.10 %.


Lynnda Pekel, Manager Offshore Technology and Business Development at ABS will illustrate what innovative design solutions are being proposed and what work is done with regulators, owners and operators to develop written regulations and processes to address technical challenges.

Pekel will also discuss which class issues are faced when designing, fabricating and operating an LNG fueled OSV in the North American ECA. She does so as part of the technical session Offshore vessels: Market update, part of Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference, on 28 October at Amsterdam RAI.

Other speakers in the offshore vessels session are Edward Heerema, president of Allseas who will share news about the approaching of the single-lift vessel “Pieter Schelte”. GustoMSCs newest drillship design class will be presented by Sjoerd Hendriks. The design characteristics and safety features incorporated in the rig design are based on recommendations taken from the Macondo incident evaluation reports. Ronald van Son of Royal IHC will talk on the design and building of 10 pipe layers for Brazil, of which three have now been delivered within 36 months. Maurizio Collu, who is a Lecturer at Cranfield University thinks there is potential for a ‘breakthrough’ commercial opportunity for the AAMV concept, utilizing the wing in ground effect technology. By bridging the speed/payload gap between ships and airplanes, a fast crew transport vessel for offshore oil rigs or wind farms far from shore can be an alternative to helicopters.
