Pakistan to build 1,200 MW LNG power plant

The government of Pakistan, through the Private Power and Infrastructure Board invited bids for the development of a 1,200 MW LNG-fueled power plant at the existing Muzaffargarj thermal power station.

The PPIB invited bids from interested private sector companies for the development of the project.

According to the invitation of bids issued on Monday, the project will be based on combined cycle gas turbine technology and will be awarded on a build, own and operate basis for a term of 30 years.

The date for submitting the bids is set to December 3, 2016, while the winner has to begin operations by February 28, 2017.

Commercial operation at the facility is planned to begin by December 31, 2018, PPIB said.

Pakistan recently signed a deal to employ a second floating storage and regasification unit at the Port Qasim as it looks to reduce its gas deficit, and help reduce the power outages.

The second FSRU alone will ensure fuel for 3,600 megawatts of new power generation plants being constructed in Pakistan to reduce power outages by 80 percent.

The country began importing LNG in March 2015 using the Excelerate Energy’s 150,900-cbm FSRU Exquisite, chartered by Engro Elengy, located at the Port Qasim in Karachi.
