GasLog’s 2014-built liquefied natural gas carrier on Wednesday transited the Agua Clara locks of the expanded Panama Canal. 

The 155,000-cbm tri-fuel Diesel Electric (TFDE) LNG carrier was built by Samsung Heavy Industries for the Monaco-based owner, operator and manager of a fleet consisting 26 liquefied natural gas carriers with 21 vessels on the water and five vessels to be delivered.

According to the AIS data provided by the vessel tracking website, MarineTraffic, the vessel loaded a cargo at the Atlantic LNG facility in Point Fortin, Trinidad and Tobago.

Panama Canal said in a statement on Wednesday that during the FY 2016 15 LNG carriers, out of 17 registered, transited the expanded Panama Canal transporting a total of 1.5 million tons of LNG.

The first LNG carrier to transit the expanded Panama Canal was the 161,870-cbm Maran Gas Apollonia, chartered by the Hague-based LNG giant Shell, loaded with a cargo from Cheniere’s Sabine pass liquefaction plant.

The expanded canal is able to accommodate about 90 percent of the world’s current LNG tankers. Only the Q-Flex and Q-Max tankers used for exports from Qatar, will not be able to use the canal.
