Report: India’s Reliance to win Bangladesh LNG power project

Bangladesh has reportedly chosen India’s Reliance Power to build a LNG-based power plant project that includes a floating storage and regasification unit.

The award would be announced during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India in mid-December, Platts reported on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources and state-run Bangladesh Power Development Board expect a draft power purchase agreement, implementation agreement and land lease agreement to be signed during the visit, Platts cited MPEMR Additional Secretary Md Mahbub Ul Alam as saying.

As previously reported by LNG World News, Reliance Power has already received an approval in principle from Bangladesh for the first phase of the LNG-based power plant project.

According to Reliance, the first phase of the 750 MW power plant will be set up at Meghnaghat, around 40 km South-East of Dhaka along with the 500,000 Mcf/d FSRU at Maheshkhali Island in Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh.

The FSRU, that will fuel the power plant, will additionally supply re-gasified LNG to PetroBangla of Bangladesh.

To remind, Bangladesh has earlier this year awarded Texas-based Excelerate Energy to build the country’s first LNG terminal at Moheshkali Island.

The project includes the provision of one of Excelerate’s existing FSRUs, the installation of a subsea buoy system anchored offshore, and the employment of port service vessels during operation.

The FSRU will have 138,000 cubic meters of LNG storage capacity and a base regasification capacity of 500,000 Mcf/d.

The terminal is expected to be in operation in 2018.
