Royal IHC launches DEME's second LNG-fueled dredger

Dutch shipbuilder and maritime equipment supplier, Royal IHC, on Saturday, January 14, launched DEME’s LNG-fueled trailing suction hopper dredger at its shipyard in Krimpen aan den Ijssel. 

The vessel named Scheldt River is the second TSHD built for the Belgian company DEME, capable of operating on liquefied natural gas.

Minerva was the first LNG-fueled trailing suction hopper dredger built by Royal IHC for DEME. What is claimed to be the world’s first LNG-powered dredger was launched at the beginning of December last year.

With an overall length of 115.9 meters and a breadth of 25 meters, Scheldt River has a hopper capacity of 7,950 cubic meters.

To ensure fuel saving IHC said in its statement that it has developed a two-speed propulsion drive which in contrast to conventional single speed propulsion ensures fuel consumption reduction when sailing at lower speeds.

Alain Bernard, director and CEO DEME Group, said, “both the Scheldt River and Minerva will comply with the strictest international and local environmental regulations.”
