Wärtsilä of Finland said its technology has been ordered by the Gdańsk Shiprepair Yard Remontowa for the $140 million mid-life upgrade and LNG conversion of BC Ferries’ two RoPax vessels.

Under the contract signed in March, Wärtsilä’s supply includes four Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engines with fuel gas systems, integrated automation systems and power management systems, a statement on Monday reveals.

Additionally, the order includes the propulsion control system, the power transmission systems comprising two gearboxes, the Wärtsilä LNGPac comprising the fuel storage tank, bunkering station, gas detection system and process control automation, rudders, site representation and integration engineering, and crew training.

The upgrading work on the two Spirit-Class vessels, the Spirit of British Columbia and the Spirit of Vancouver Island, is scheduled for fall of 2017 and the fall of 2018.

Wärtsilä’s equipment will be delivered to the Remontowa shipyard in mid-2017 and mid-2018, prior to the arrival of the vessels.

Upgrading works include surveying the stern tube and renewing components, surveying and overhauling the controllable pitch propeller (CPP) hubs, redesigning and renewing the CPP propeller blades, surveying, renewing and overhauling the oil distribution boxes, and renewing two bow thrusters and E motors, Wärtsilä added.

The vessels are scheduled for completion in the spring of 2018, for the 1993-built Spirit of British Columbia and the spring of 2019 for the 1994-built Spirit of Vancouver Island.

4th Annual Upstream West Africa Summit 2018

In June 2018, Senegal will play host to the No.1 Annual B2B Upstream Oil & Gas event, which will bring together the senior decision makers from across the prolific West Africa region to discuss the trends and challenges currently facing the Oil and Gas industry.

Since the discovery by Tullow Oil in 2007 of the Jubilee Field in Ghana, the Upstream sector has refocused its efforts to explore similar plays around the entire West and North West African coast. These efforts were rewarded with Cairn Energy’s prolific discovery in 2014 followed by Kosmos’ in 2015. The West Africa region has the industry’s spotlight firmly focused on further unlocking the potential of this largely underexplored region.

Companies that will be looking toward further unlocking the deepwater hydrocarbon potential of West Africa include: PETROSEN, BP, Kosmos Energy, Cairn Energy, FAR, Total E&P, Premier Oil, Shell, Tullow Oil along with the Ministries and key solution providers.
